The task: design a cover for a free prequel.

The catch: the cover design for the rest of the series was designed months ago by the in house designers at a publisher.

The solution: make a complementary cover!

First things first

Let’s take a look at the 3 covers for Donna Alward’s Darling, VT series. (BTW, this is a graphic I designed for Donna to use on various social media sites. Yeah, I can do that! ;))

Note the soft colors, the expansive sky, small-town feel on these covers. Donna’s name is large and at the top of the cover while the titles are somewhat smaller and a combination of fonts.

Now let’s look at the prequel cover.

Donna selected this kissin’ couple because there’s a wedding in the story and the rock wall hints at the bridge that appears in all the Darling books.

To complement the feel of the other covers, I selected an image of Vermont with a similar expansive sky.

The text for both the title, author name and the series title were selected to complement the other covers as well. The colors appear on the other covers as well.
